As summer 2019 drew to a close, El Gouna began welcoming one of its most striking architectural additions: the Gouna Conference and Culture Centre. What started as undeveloped land quickly took shape through monumental archways, water features, and an ambitious vision that brought business, culture, and the arts together in the heart of town.

The first stage, the Plaza, was completed in November 2019. Today, the story behind the centre reflects something larger than a single venue: El Gouna’s continued evolution as an all-year-round town where cultural experiences, international events, hospitality, and business can come together.

First Impressions of the Gouna Conference and Culture Centre

Located just off Mohamed Ibrahim Kamal Street near the Upper Nubia neighborhood, the center immediately stands out through its scale and architectural character.

Early renderings envisioned a community space framed by towering archways and surrounded by reflective water. That relationship between architecture, sky, landscape, and water became one of the defining elements of the design.

The Plaza: A Setting for Events in El Gouna

The Plaza was completed in just 16 weeks and was conceived as a flexible setting for cultural, social, and large-scale events.

With space for catered events of up to 800 guests and screening events seating up to 1,400, the Plaza was designed to accommodate occasions ranging from festivals and exhibitions to weddings and graduations.

Its scale and distinctive setting also give it a unique place among event venues in El Gouna, combining functionality with an architectural backdrop that feels closely connected to the town.

 

El Gouna Conference Centre and Business Events

The vision for the El Gouna Conference Centre extended the venue’s purpose into the world of business and corporate events.

Plans for the second phase included an auditorium seating up to 2,000 people, several VIP rooms suitable for seminars, and eight meeting rooms. Together with El Gouna’s wider hotel and hospitality offering, these facilities were envisioned to support Egyptian and international companies looking for a distinctive location for conferences, seminars, and corporate gatherings.

The Concert Hall: Culture at the Heart of the Vision

The Concert Hall formed the third phase of the original vision for the centre and grew from Orascom Development founder Samih Sawiris’ longstanding passion for classical music.

Designed with a capacity of around 600 attendees and space for a 120-piece orchestra, the hall was conceived for international musical performances spanning classical music, traditional Arabic music, opera, and other live productions.

Acoustics were placed at the centre of the concept, creating a space intended to bring architecture and sound together as part of El Gouna’s growing cultural landscape.

Architecture Inspired by Egypt and the Region

The architectural vision was developed by Christina Seilern and Studio Seilern Architects in London.

The design draws on Egyptian and Middle Eastern architectural references while reinterpreting them in a contemporary way. Islamic arches, monumental proportions, Nubian influences, and reflections from the surrounding water all contribute to the centre’s visual identity.

Rather than recreating historical architecture, the design uses those references to create something distinctly modern. The oversized columns and staggered archways give the structure its sense of scale, while the water surrounding the venue reflects the changing light throughout the day.
